10 items offered in a baby shower that may stay in the box

I was lucky enough to experience a wonderful shower for my first child and also attended several events celebrating the arrival of a new baby.

Let's be honest.

Some guests want to stand out by offering original, unexpected, or unique gifts. The problem is that these gifts often end up... at the bottom of a drawer or left in boxes.

Out of curiosity (and a little experience!), I surveyed a few parents to find out their opinions.

Here are 10 types of products that often come up among the gifts that we rarely use, if at all.

1. Fabric bibs

They look pretty, but they're not ideal for meals. They often need to be detached.

We opt for: silicone bibs, with a small compartment to catch food . They are far more effective. They can be washed in two seconds under water, or sometimes even in the dishwasher. Silicone bibs or long-sleeved bibs with compartments from the Quebec company Micasso & Co are an excellent choice.

2. Newborn size clothes

We receive a lot of them, and we often already have a lot. Because yes, they're really cute. Yet, this size is worn for just a few weeks, sometimes not at all, depending on the baby's weight.

We opt for: clothes in sizes 6 months to 24 months. This is a much better choice. Also, make sure that the choice of patterns and colors respect the mother's preferences.

3. Large items without prior consultation

A stroller, a baby carrier, a playpen: yes, it's generous. But be careful. Every parent has their own preferences depending on their lifestyle. A lightweight stroller for city dwellers, an all-terrain stroller for walkers, with or without a baby carrier, with special gadgets...

We opt for: it's better to ask before buying. These are big purchases that will be used for several months, even 1 or 2 years.

4. Stuffed animals… more stuffed animals

They're cute, they're soft, but we get tons of them. And between us, babies don't really get around to them until they're 2 or 3 years old. They often end up on a shelf, gathering dust. One or two is enough.

We opt for: sensory toys. I bought several for my children to make moving around easier and keep them entertained in the stroller. Choose toys in bright red, blue, or green. These are the colors that babies between 4 and 6 months old will be most likely to recognize.

5. Decorative trinkets

A little lovingly designed decor? We appreciate the thought, but the reality is that most parents are already short on space. And they probably have a specific theme or style for their nursery. As a result, these items end up in a box.

We opted for a gift card . Parents will appreciate it and it will definitely be used.

6. Baby bottles and pacifiers

Every baby has their own preferences... and sometimes they reject several models before finding what they like. Buying multiple bottles or pacifiers from the same brand is risky. Especially since not all parents will opt for the bottle or pacifiers.

We opt for teething toys. All babies go through this process, and teething is painful for little ones. Toys help relieve the pain and also allow the child to discover sensations with their mouth.

7. The famous pee teepees

Funny on the surface, but in reality? A simple washcloth does the same job, only better. No need for gadgets that will end up lying around in a drawer.

We opt for: beautiful washcloths. I like the large waffle cotton washcloths from Ma Mini Merveille

8. Perfumed or unsuitable skincare products for delicate skin

A baby's skin is ultra-sensitive. Scented or overly strong products can cause irritation. Choose gentle, natural products designed for newborns.

We opt for: In Quebec, brands like Douce Mousse and Gom.mee offer very good options. The Bioderma range, available in pharmacies, is also one of our favorites for eczema/dermatitis-prone skin.

9. A wipe warmer

It's sophisticated and pleasant for little bottoms. But it's often underused. Babies get used to room temperature wipes very quickly.

We opt for: wet wipes. Quite simply. Whether on the go or at home, they're a product parents use a lot.

10. Ignoring the list prepared by parents

Many parents take the time to create a wish list or list the essentials they'd like to receive. Sticking to this list helps avoid duplication and respects their choices.

No need to rack your brains to give a gift voucher. Keep it simple. Diapers, wipes, Tylenol, zinc cream, Hydrasense pods—it's the starter kit every parent will use. A sure bet.

And remember: it's not the gift that matters most, but the thought (and the little helping hand it gives the new parents).
