How to dress a baby this summer

I look forward to summer! The beautiful days are upon us and I am already thinking of the good times swimming, exploring and playing outside with the children. No coat or boots to put on in a hurry with a crying baby. This is the dream!
Summer is a time of intense heat, and dressing your baby under one year old can be a challenge. Especially in Quebec, temperatures vary so much that it becomes difficult to make the right choice for your little treasure's wardrobe.
Choosing the right clothing is crucial to keeping your little one comfortable and safe on hot days. I'm sharing some essentials to keep in mind for this summer.
1. Opt for light, breathable clothing
When planning your baby's summer wardrobe, opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics such as cotton, bamboo and lyocell (Tencel). These fabrics, knitted from natural fibers, allow your baby's delicate skin to breathe, helping to regulate body temperature and prevent rashes. Soft cotton rompers, lightweight short-sleeved bodysuits and matching sets are perfect for warm days.
2. Keep it comfy with shorts and overalls
It's really easy to cover little legs when the sun is strong. In the stroller, we add a small soft muslin to cover and protect from the sun's rays. For a practical and adorable summer outfit, shorts and overalls are really great. Lightweight cotton shorts give your little explorer freedom of movement while keeping them cool. Overalls are also a great option, as they provide optimal coverage while being comfortable and easy to put on. You can simply dress the baby in overalls if the sun is not too strong, or you can add a t-shirt or a light onesie for good protection.
3. Don't underestimate the importance of onesie
Choosing the right onesie is essential for your baby's comfort during the summer. Opt for breathable cotton onesies that absorb moisture and keep your baby's skin dry and cool. Bamboo onesies are also a fantastic option, as bamboo is naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic, ideal for babies' sensitive skin.
Especially since a baby in a onesie, thighs in the wind, is really cute!
My onesies are very loose and are worn more like a sweater, a t-shirt. Wear it alone with pants, shorts or with your thighs exposed. Several companies offer more “body” type models that are used to wear under pajamas or under looser clothing.
4. Protect baby’s skin with hats and sunglasses
During sunny days, it is crucial to protect your baby's delicate skin from the sun's harmful rays. Make sure he wears a lightweight hat with a wide visor to protect his face and neck. Additionally, you can get sunglasses specially designed for babies to protect their sensitive eyes. Choose models with maximum UV protection and an adjustable elastic band for a comfortable fit.
On the other hand, if you are able to make him wear it, that's great. I never succeeded. (LOL)
At our house, we are really in love with Jan & Jul hats. My two children carried them from birth.
5. Comfortable at night with light pajamas
Even on hot summer nights, it's essential to make sure your baby stays comfortable and well dressed. Opt for lightweight cotton or bamboo pajamas to allow the skin to breathe while sleeping. Avoid synthetic materials (like polyester and nylon) which can trap heat and cause excessive sweating. Make sure baby's pajamas fit well for their safety but not too tight to ensure a peaceful and comfortable sleep.
If you are the sleeper type (sleep bags), know that several companies offer models made with soft muslin, such as Perlimpinpin . Find out what type of TOG to choose to ensure maximum comfort during the night, especially if it is air-conditioned in the house or very hot in the room. The type of TOG will be different.
Hoping to have been able to help you with these few tips, I wish you a wonderful summer!
Sometimes, during the day, it is better to have more thickness and remove it if it is too hot rather than baby being cold. Fibers to prioritize such as cotton, bamboo and lyocell are wonderful for regulating temperature well.
